Sweet Simplicity® is a zero-calorie tabletop sweetener that is 100% natural. Use it just like sugar to sweeten hot and cold drinks and sprinkle on cereal and fruit.
Sweet Simplicity® contains erythritol and fructose as its sweetening ingredients. Small amounts of natural flavors are also added. A 6-Gram packet contains approximately 5 grams erythritol and 1 gram fructose.
The ingredients in Sweet Simplicity®, erythritol, fructose and natural flavors are all "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) by the FDA.
Sweet Simplicity® has been certified kosher parve by the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations.
Erythritol is a polyol (sugar alcohol) and belongs to a group of carbohydrate-based sweeteners. It is a white crystalline powder that is odorless with a clean, sweet taste that is similar to sucrose. Erythritol has been part of the human diet for thousands of years as it is present in such fruits as grapes, melons and pears. It also can be found in mushrooms and fermented foods such as wine, soy sauce and cheese.
Erythritol distinguishes itself from other polyols as its caloric value is only 0.2 calories per gram and it has high digestive tolerance.
Yes, Sweet Simplicity® is safe. The ingredients in Sweet Simplicity® - erythritol, fructose and natural flavors - are all "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) by the FDA.
The large body of published safety data supports the conclusion that the intake of erythritol would not be expected to cause adverse effects in humans under the conditions of its intended use in food.
Over the past 10 years, erythritol has built up a history of safe use by expanding its approval around the world. It is currently authorized for use in foods in 12 jurisdictions. Petitions have been submitted to additional government agencies throughout the world to expand the use of erythritol.
In the United States a GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) affirmation petition was accepted for filing by the FDA on January 15, 1997. The U.S. GRAS affirmation states erythritol is intended for use as a flavor enhancer, formulation aid, humectant, nutritive sweetener, stabilizer and thickener, sequestrant and texturizer.
Sweet Simplicity® is appropriate for use by individuals with diabetes. It is a zero-calorie* sweetener and can easily be incorporated into a diabetes plan for individuals with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. Due to the unique metabolic profile of erythritol, the main sweetening ingredient in Sweet Simplicity®, the amount of carbohydrate that needs to be counted towards one's daily intake is negligible.
*Sweet Simplicity® products actually contain 4.7 calories. FDA labeling regulations state that if a serving has less than 5 calories, it may be labeled as "0" calories.
Sweet Simplicity® is safe for children of all ages. However, it's important for children to have ample calories for growth.
Sweet Simplicity® is safe for both the mother and developing child. Pregnant and lactating women need adequate calories to nourish the fetus or infant and should consult with a doctor or registered dietitian about their nutritional needs.
Sweet Simplicity® is appropriate for use as part of a weight control program. Since Sweet Simplicity® is lower in calories when compared to sugar, it can be used as a valuable product in a sensible weight loss program while satisfying your sweet tooth. It is possible that by providing some sweetness, Sweet Simplicity® may improve dietary compliance.
Sweet Simplicity® does not contain lactose nor are any of the ingredients derived from milk.
Sweet Simplicity® does not contain gluten and will not pose a problem for individuals who cannot tolerate gluten or have celiac disease.
Erythritol, the main sweetening ingredient in Sweet Simplicity®, is a sugar alcohol (polyol). Because erythritol is rapidly absorbed in the small intestine and rapidly eliminated by the body within 24 hours, laxative side effects sometimes associated with excessive polyol consumption are unlikely when consuming erythritol containing foods.
Erythritol is produced through a fermentation process using natural raw ingredients derived from corn.
Sweet Simplicity® sweetened with erythritol also contains a carbohydrate source (fructose), so it can contribute to the development of dental caries. However, the amount of carbohydrate (less than 1 gram per serving) is much less than an equivalent serving of sugar (4 grams of carbohydrate per serving).
Sugar alcohols, including erythritol, are not acted upon by bacteria in the mouth and therefore do not cause tooth decay.
